Converse was founded in 1908 in Malden, Massachusetts, originally as a rubber shoe company. In its early years, the company focused on winterized rubber-soled footwear before pivoting to athletic shoes. In 1917, Converse introduced the All Star basketball shoe, a canvas and rubber sneaker that would become one of the most iconic shoes in history.
The shoe's transformation into a cultural icon came largely through Charles "Chuck" Taylor, a basketball player and salesman who joined Converse in 1921. Taylor traveled the country promoting the shoes, giving clinics, and offering feedback that led to design improvements — most notably the addition of the ankle patch. In 1932, Converse honored him by adding his name to that patch, and the Chuck Taylor All Star was born.
Throughout the mid-20th century, Chuck Taylors dominated the basketball court, worn by players at every level, including the 1936 U.S. Olympic team. As athletic technology advanced in the 1970s and 80s, Chucks lost ground on the court but found a new identity in music and counterculture — embraced by punk rockers, artists, and rebels.
