Charles Eames (1907–1978) and Ray Eames (1912–1988) were American designers who gave shape to America's twentieth century. They were best known for the beauty, comfort, elegance, and delicacy of their mass-producible furniture.
Charles studied architecture at Washington University in St. Louis but left due to his too-progressive ideologies. Ray Kaiser, born in Sacramento, California, demonstrated her fascination with the abstract qualities of ordinary objects early on. She moved to New York to study with artist Hans Hofmann, later helping found the American Abstract Artists group.
Their partnership began when Ray assisted Charles and Eero Saarinen with their winning entry for MoMA's 1940 Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition APC. They married in June 1941 and moved to Los Angeles. During World War II, they created molded plywood leg splints for the U.S. Navy, work that enabled their furniture innovations.
From 1943 to 1988, the Eames Office operated from a renovated garage in Venice, Los Angeles. They pioneered the use of molded plywood, fiberglass, and bent metal in furniture design. Their iconic Eames Lounge Chair, designed in 1956, quickly became a prototype for ergonomic furniture . Beyond furniture, they created films, exhibitions, and educational projects, including the influential film Powers of Ten.
