The Story: This super cool 80s mug from the Rusty Pelican in Newport Beach is iconic, heavy and that perfect diner lip.

The Rusty Pelican brand was founded in 1965 by Louis “Pete” Siracusa, a former lifeguard and surfer who built it into an upscale seafood chain. The Newport Beach location specifically opened in 1972 at 2735 West Coast Highway, where it still operates today — perched right on Newport Harbor with sweeping views of the bay. Pete eventually retired to Maui but after becoming restless he opened a new restaurant called Baja Fresh, which was eventually bought out by Wendy’s and is the the Baja Fresh that is in every strip mall these days.

Pete is shown on the far left of the second image, image was taken by Bruce Brown of Endless Summer fame.
